About Spedra
Spedra is one of a group of drugs similar to Viagra known as phosphodiesterase 5 inhibitors (PDE-5). They work by relaxing the blood vessels in the penis which results in more blood flowing to the penis when you are sexually excited.
Spedra is one of the newest treatments on the market for erectile dysfunction and differentiates itself by being quicker acting than Viagra. Spedra can take as little as 15-30 minutes to take effect whereas Viagra can take up to one hour.
How do I take it?
You should take Spedra approximately 15-30 minutes before you are planning to have intercourse. Spedra will last in your system for around 6 hours so when sexually aroused you will be able to have intercourse during this window of time. Tablets are swallowed whole with a glass of water. You must be sexually excited for the drug to work- Spedra treats the physical element of erectile dysfunction and will not increase sexual desire.
Dosage
Spedra comes in three different strength tablets; 50mg, 100mg and 200mg.
100mg tablets are the standard dose and we recommend you try these first. If you experience side effects, you can reduce your dose to 50mg or if you find you require a stronger effect, you can try 200mg.
We do not recommend that you split tablets in half as you cannot guarantee that the bioavailability of active ingredient will be the same in both halves of the tablet (e.g. you may split a 200mg tablet but receive 150mg of active ingredient in one half and 50mg in the other).
Other treatments are available for erectile dysfunction:
If your erectile dysfunction is situational, for example, you still have an early morning erection, then psychosexual therapy may be helpful. You can access registered therapists on www.counselling-directory.org.uk Alternatively, call or email us here and we can arrange a referral.
We also offer a FREE consultation with our prescriber on request or alternatively, our Pharmacists are on hand to answer your queries. If you require this service please contact us via email: [email protected]
For further information on treatments for erectile dysfunction, including complementary treatments such as kegel exercises (which strengthen the muscles in the pelvic floor and can be helpful for patients with ED) please see the NHS website: http://www.nhs.uk/Conditions/Erectile-dysfunction/Pages/Treatment.aspx
If you have any questions about the dose or directions for use, please contact us in the pharmacy on 01625 460621 to speak to our pharmacist or prescriber in confidence. You can also email [email protected]
Patient Information Leaflet
Please read the patient information leaflet before commencing treatment. Patient information leaflet for Spedra can be found HERE
Side Effects
Side effects which occur for between 1 in 10 to 1 in 100 patients include:
- Flushing
- Headaches
- Nasal congestion
Other side effects which are less common can include:
Priapism
Priapism is an erection that lasts for 4 hours or more and patients who have this must seek immediate medical attention. If priapism is not treated urgently, it can result in tissue damage to the penis and permanent loss of potency may result.
Visual problems
Visual problems have been reported in patients taking other PDE5 inhibitors (such as Viagra). This is rare but a lack of oxygen supply to the optic nerve can have the effect of sight loss. For this reason, it is important that patients with inherited eye disorders such as retinitis pigmentosa or any patient who has had NAION (non-arteritic ischaemic optic neuropathy) do not take Spedra or other similar medicines. Any loss of vision should be reported immediately to a doctor.
Hearing problems
Do not take Spedra (or any other PDE5 inhibitors such as Viagra or Cialis) if you experience a sudden decrease or loss of hearing.
A full list of all side effects can be found HERE in the patient information leaflet.
Interactions
Alcohol
It is not recommended to take alcohol with Spedra due to an increased risk of dizziness or fainting which can lead to falls or collapses. Spedra lowers patient's blood pressure and in combination with alcohol can make these events more likely.
Grapefruit juice
Grapefruit juice can increase the effects of Spedra (including side effects) and should not be taken within 24 hours of this medicine.
Nitrates
Spedra (and all PDE5 inhibitors like Viagra and Cialis) interact strongly with a group of drugs known as nitrates. Nitrates can be found in:
- Medicines to treat problems such as angina or blood pressure
- Tablet form (e.g. adalat) or oral sprays (e.g. GTN spray for angina)
- Recreational drugs such as poppers
It is very important that you consult with our prescriber via our medical questionnaire if you are on any medication at all.
Blood pressure and heart problems
Spedra is contraindicated for use in those people with high and low blood pressure as well as those with existing heart conditions. Spedra lowers patient's blood pressure and can therefore interfere with treatment for blood pressure.
If in doubt, please call the pharmacy on 01625 460 621 to speak to either our pharmacist or prescriber in confidence or email [email protected]
