Sildenafil functions by relaxing and widening the blood vessels in the penis. This increased blood flow, when you are sexually aroused, leads to a firmer and more sustained erection at the desired time.
Sildenafil does not cause an immediate erection. Typically, it takes about an hour to start working, and its effects last for approximately four hours. During this time, you can expect a firmer and longer-lasting erection, making it ideal for planning sexual activity.

Sildenafil does not affect your libido or sexual desire, so sexual arousal is still necessary for it to work.

If you're planning to have sex after dinner, be aware that taking sildenafil with a large meal may delay its effects by about an hour.
The effects of sildenafil can last up to four hours, providing a timeframe in which you can achieve stronger erections. For most people, this is sufficient for satisfying sexual activity. However, if you want more flexibility, tadalafil offers a longer duration of action, lasting up to 36 hours, while Tadalafil Daily provides continuous effectiveness.
A study examining men who used sildenafil for four years suggests that it is safe and effective for long-term use.

If you find yourself using sildenafil over an extended period, it may be beneficial to consult with your doctor to explore the underlying causes.
The recommended starting dose of sildenafil is 50 mg, taken once per day on the days you plan to have sex. Depending on how you respond, you may want to discuss increasing the dose to 100 mg with your clinician.

If timing sildenafil around sexual activity is challenging or if spontaneity is important, tadalafil might be a better option. It works similarly to sildenafil but starts working within 30 minutes and its effects last up to 36 hours.
Tadalafil works by encouraging blood flow to the penis during sexual stimulation. This helps to achieve and maintain an erection.

Important note: Tadalafil will only work where there is sexual stimulation. It will not help to increase sexual desire.
Take one tablet at least 30 minutes before sex. Effects can last for up to 36 hours. Never take more than one tablet within 36 hours. Alcohol will limit Tadalafil's effectiveness. Do not combine Tadalafil with other ED medicines.
Tadalafil treats ED in 80% of cases. If you have drunk more than 1-2 units of alcohol, you may find Tadalafil is less effective. Food does not impact how Tadalafil works.
You might hear or see people referring to Tadalafil as the 'weekend' pill. This is because the effects of Tadalafil can last up to 36 hours, giving you help with getting an erection across a 2.5-day period. Taken on a Friday afternoon/evening the medication could take effect for the whole weekend, hence the nickname Tadalafil weekend pill.
It usually takes 30-60 minutes for Tadalafil to start working. But don't forget you will only see the effects if you're sexually aroused. Tadalafil can last for up to 36 hours.

Erectile Dysfunction (ED) is when a man cannot obtain an erection or cannot maintain it long enough for sexual activity. This has also previously been called impotence. It is something that affects lots of men and of all ages. Throughout their lives 70% of men may experience this at some point.

When a man engages in sexual activity the brain will send signals to the penis to allow extra blood flow and this then leads to an erection. It is this process that can be interrupted and causes ED.

Sometimes day to day life can cause ED on occasion. You may be tired or had a bit too much to drink, and this is nothing to worry about.

If you have ED more often though it could be caused by something underlying, such as:

  • High blood pressure
  • High Cholesterol
  • Diabetes
  • Low hormone level
  • Stress

As these can be underlying problems it is best to get these checked by your GP as ED can be a sign that these things are developing.

There are different tablet treatments available for ED which all work in a similar way. You may know the names Viagra and Cialis.

These work by helping to increase the blood flow to the penis when sexually aroused to help obtain an erection. Many men find this sort of treatment effective and you can contact us today about these options. Your GP may also recommended treating any underlying issue, this may be through medication or lifestyle changes.

Generally, having a healthy diet and exercising to maintain a healthy weight will help to reduce the symptoms of ED. Reducing alcohol consumption and stopping smoking can also be a big help.

Erectile dysfunction tablets are generally safe for both short-term and long-term use.

A study examining men who used sildenafil over a four-year period found it to be safe and effective for extended use.

Similarly, another study involving 1,173 men with ED reported that tadalafil was "safe and well tolerated" throughout the two-year duration of the study.

However, if you find yourself using sildenafil (or any other ED medication) for an extended period, it's advisable to explore the underlying causes with the guidance of our clinicians. A blood test can help identify the root cause and determine any lifestyle changes that might permanently resolve your ED.
