Why You Should Buy Generic Sildenafil

Viagra is the more expensive branded form of the generic medicine Sildenafil. Both medicines have EXACTLY the same active ingredient and will work in EXACTLY the same way. Generic medicines are always better value for money.

When drug companies first make a medicine, they have a certain period of time where they exclusively hold the licence for that product and therefore have a monopoly on the medicine and its price. This can help them to recoup the cost of the research and development of the medicine in the first instance.

However, once this licence expires, other drug manufacturers are able to make the same product (the generic) which opens the market up to competition and prices for medicine are often reduced. The licence for Viagra expired in June 2013 which led to a number of manufacturers making this medicine at a greatly reduced price. At Assured Pharmacy, we pass these cost savings onto our customers.

We only source from fully UK licensed generics drug manufacturers (Accord, Mylan, Teva, Milpharm) so you can be assured of the quality of medicines you receive. The actual generic brand medicine you receive will, however, be dependent upon stock availability.

How does Viagra and Sildenafil work?

Viagra (Sildenafil) helps men to get and maintain an erection when sexually stimulated and/or excited. The medicine relaxes the blood vessels in the penis which results in more blood flowing to the penis when you are sexually excited.

How do I take it?

You should take Viagra (Sildenafil) approximately 1 hour before planning to have intercourse. Within a window of between 30 minutes and 4 hours after you take the medicine, it will be easier to keep and maintain an erection when you are sexually excited. If you take this medicine after a meal with a high fat content it may take a little longer to start working. This medicine will only work when you are sexually excited. You won’t get an erection just by taking Viagra (Sildenafil).

Dosage

The standard recommended dose for Viagra (Sildenafil) is 50mg and this will be suitable for most people.  If this dose is not effective, you can try 100mg and if 50mg gives you side effects you can also reduce the dose to 25mg tablets.

You must not take more than 100mg daily of Sildenafil/ Viagra. Clinical trials have been conducted in patients taking up to 200mg sildenafil and it was found that ‘doses of 200mg did not result in increased efficacy but did increase the incidence of adverse reactions (headache, flushing, dizziness, dyspepsia, nasal congestion, and altered vision).’

In addition, in patients taking more than 100mg daily, there have been reports of rhabdomyolysis (a breakdown in skeletal muscle tissue the byproducts of which can lead to kidney failure), visual perception changes, vertebral artery dissection (a tear in the artery supplying blood to the brain), heart attacks and aggressive behaviour.

If the 100mg strength doesn’t work for you, there may be alternatives you can try and we recommend that you call us for a free consultation with our pharmacist or prescriber to discuss any underlying conditions you may have. We recommend that all men taking medicine for erectile dysfunction have regular tests for blood pressure, cholesterol, diabetes and hormone imbalances. For instance, it may be that by fixing a hormone imbalance such as testosterone, your Viagra medication will be even more effective.

In addition, drug manufacturers do not advise patients to split tablets in half to get the correct dosage as they cannot guarantee that the active ingredient will be distributed evenly throughout the tablet.  For instance, if you cut a 100mg tablet in two, you may find that you get 80mg in one half of the tablet and 20mg in the other half leading to either an overdose (increased risk of side effects) or a suboptimal dose (the medication may not work).

It is important that you choose the correct dose for you. If you wish to talk to our pharmacist or prescribers about this, please contact us in the pharmacy on 01625 460621 or email [email protected].

Side Effects

Viagra (Sildenafil) is normally well tolerated, however, side effects can include:

  • Headache
  • Dizziness
  • Nausea

Side effects normally subside after a few hours, however, if you experience a prolonged or painful erection (longer than 4 hours), then you must contact your doctor immediately.

Other treatments are available for erectile dysfunction:

If your erectile dysfunction is situational, for example, you still have an early morning erection, then psychosexual therapy may be helpful. You can access registered therapists on www.counselling-directory.org.uk  Alternatively, call or email us here and we can arrange a referral.

For further information on treatments for erectile dysfunction, including complementary treatments such as kegel exercises (which strengthen the muscles in the pelvic floor and can be helpful for patients with ED) please see the NHS website: http://www.nhs.uk/Conditions/Erectile-dysfunction/Pages/Treatment.asp

We also offer a FREE consultation with our Prescriber on request or alternatively our Pharmacists are on hand to answer your queries. If you require this service please contact us via email: [email protected]

Drug interactions

There are a number of medicines which interact with Sildenafil/ Viagra. For an exhaustive list please see the patient information leaflet (see section below) or call us in the pharmacy to discuss your specific situation. The main drug interactions are listed here:

Recreational drugs such as ‘poppers’ or amyl nitrate
Alpha blockers used for urinary retention or blood pressure problems (eg Flomax or Cardura)
Anti- arrhythmic drugs such as disopyramide
Antibiotics such as erythromycin

Grapefruit juice**
Nicorandil
Nitrates
Riociguat
Cimetidine (to treat stomach ulcers)

Please do not take Sildenafil/Viagra if you have taken any of the above drugs within the last 60 days without first consulting with either us in the Pharmacy ([email protected] / 01625 460621) or via email with our prescribers [email protected].

**We advise not to take Sildenafil/Viagra with grapefruit juice as the blood concentration of Sildenafil will possibly be increased resulting in side effects.

Viagra vs Viagra Connect

What is the difference between Viagra and Viagra Connect?

Not much really. They both have the same active ingredient (Sildenafil) and they are medically equivalent. The products are even made by the same manufacturer (Pfizer). Viagra Connect has been manufactured as a OTC (over The Counter) Medication which means that although it is the same as normal Viagra you don’t require a doctors prescription to buy it.

So why the difference in price?

When a medicine is first created, the company who manufacture it are given a patent so that they are the only people who can manufacture and sell this medication. This allows the company to sell it at a higher price to help recoup their research and development costs. After a set amount of time the patent will run out and other companies can then manufacture and sell this medication but at a much lower price as they haven’t had to spend on all the original research, advertisement etc.

This is why the price of Pfizer Branded Viagra is considered expensive when you can get Generic Sildenafil or Viagra Connect for less.

Is one better than the other?

The short answer is no. Viagra will work just as well as Viagra Connect if these medicines are bought from a fully licenced pharmacy like ourselves (Online or otherwise) then you can be sure of the quality. Obviously, if you buy from a website that isn’t a fully licenced and regulated pharmacy then you do run the risk of your medications being of a much lower quality/fake.

Can I take Viagra (Sildenafil) when I have been drinking?

Drinking alcohol can affect your ability to get an erection. For the medicine to work to its full effect, it is advised not to drink excessive amounts of alcohol whilst taking this medicine.

Can I take Viagra (Sildenafil) if I have heart problems or high blood pressure?

Viagra (Sildenafil) will interact with a number of medicines used to treat heart conditions. If you are unsure whether you are eligible for treatment, please consult our prescribers via our online questionnaire or email [email protected]

What do I do if I suffer a prolonged erection after taking Viagra (Sildenafil)?

In the event of an erection that persists for longer than four hours, you need to seek immediate medical assistance.  A prolonged erection is a condition known as priapism and if this is not treated immediately, penile tissue damage and permanent loss of potency could result.

Effects on vision?

There have been newspaper reports concerning Viagra affecting your vision. Cases of visual defects such as non-arteritic ischaemic optic neuropathy, a rare condition, have been reported in connection with the intake of Viagra. In case of any sudden visual defect, you must stop taking Viagra (Sildenafil) and seek medical assistance immediately.
