A sexual relationship is a fundamental necessity of a successful relationship between partners. A large number of our population are suffering from sexual disorders which are making their relationship stressful for their partners. These kinds of issues are common in both sexes.
The major problem among men is erectile dysfunction. It is the loss of ability of the penis to get an erection or loss of an erection while performing sex. It is the most common disorder among men irrespective of the age. Although it is more in men above the age of 40. According to the NHS, almost 50% of the male population between the ages of 40 to 70 years are suffering from erectile dysfunction. As we all know that to cope with this problem Viagra is very well known to be a magic pill. Viagra is so popular among male that it used to generate profit in the millions. The recognition and usage of Viagra have reached to such a level among the male population that it is literally becoming the synonym of erectile dysfunction these days.
What does Viagra do in men’s body?
Sildenafil is the generic name of the drug present in Viagra. This drug is used to treat male impotence, an inability to gain or sustain an erection. Considering the mechanism of the drug it is a phosphodiesterase inhibitor. It maintains the level of the messenger enzyme named as guanosine monophosphate which acts on smooth muscles allowing them to relax. This relaxation of muscles leads to erection of the penis upon stimulation. One thing should be very clear, Viagra has nothing to do with the stimulus. It works only when the penis is sexually stimulated. The erection of the penis is caused by increased blood flow to the penis through dilation of arteries. The perfusion of blood in the penis increases and helps in the mechanism of erection.

Description
How does Viagra and Sildenafil work?
Viagra (Sildenafil) helps men to get and maintain an erection when sexually stimulated and/or excited. The medicine relaxes the blood vessels in the penis which results in more blood flowing to the penis when you are sexually excited.
How do I take it?
You should take Viagra (Sildenafil) approximately 1 hour before planning to have intercourse. Within a window of between 30 minutes and 4 hours after you take the medicine, it will be easier to keep and maintain an erection when you are sexually excited. If you take this medicine after a meal with a high fat content it may take a little longer to start working. This medicine will only work when you are sexually excited. You won’t get an erection just by taking Viagra (Sildenafil).
Dosage
The standard recommended dose for Viagra (Sildenafil) is 50mg and this will be suitable for most people. If this dose is not effective, you can try 100mg and if 50mg gives you side effects you can also reduce the dose to 25mg tablets.
You must not take more than 100mg daily of Sildenafil/ Viagra. Clinical trials have been conducted in patients taking up to 200mg sildenafil and it was found that ‘doses of 200mg did not result in increased efficacy but did increase the incidence of adverse reactions (headache, flushing, dizziness, dyspepsia, nasal congestion, and altered vision).’
In addition, in patients taking more than 100mg daily, there have been reports of rhabdomyolysis (a breakdown in skeletal muscle tissue the byproducts of which can lead to kidney failure), visual perception changes, vertebral artery dissection (a tear in the artery supplying blood to the brain), heart attacks and aggressive behaviour.
If the 100mg strength doesn’t work for you, there may be alternatives you can try and we recommend that you call us for a free consultation with our pharmacist or doctor to discuss any underlying conditions you may have. We recommend that all men taking medicine for erectile dysfunction have regular tests for blood pressure, cholesterol, diabetes and hormone imbalances. For instance, it may be that by fixing a hormone imbalance such as testosterone, your Viagra medication will be even more effective.
In addition, drug manufacturers do not advise patients to split tablets in half to get the correct dosage as they cannot guarantee that the active ingredient will be distributed evenly throughout the tablet. For instance, if you cut a 100mg tablet in two, you may find that you get 80mg in one half of the tablet and 20mg in the other half leading to either an overdose (increased risk of side effects) or a suboptimal dose (the medication may not work).
It is important that you choose the correct dose for you. If you wish to talk to our pharmacist or doctor about this, please contact us in the pharmacy on 01625 460621 or email [email protected].
Side Effects
Viagra (Sildenafil) is normally well tolerated, however, side effects can include:
- Headache
- Dizziness
- Nausea
Side effects normally subside after a few hours, however, if you experience a prolonged or painful erection (longer than 4 hours), then you must contact your doctor immediately.

The increasing curiosity of women towards Viagra
Sexual problems are not limited to men only. Many women also suffer from a number of sexual problems that lead to an overall unpleasant sex life. These problems differ in every case depending upon the underlying causes. Though Viagra was introduced to treat erection problems of male, its immense popularity is making women population curious about it. Questions are being raised, does Viagra work on women to help with their sex-related issues? Can Viagra help women in the same way as it helps men to get a better sex life?
There may be several reasons that women are asking for Viagra or a Viagra-like pill to help them. As they reach middle age, an obvious decrease in sexual desire or sex drive occurs. There are many underlying factors contributing to this problem. Low sex desire can originate from a daily routine full of stress, or maybe chronic health issues such as multiple sclerosis or diabetes. Another cause of a decrease in sex drive among many women is a condition called female sexual interest/arousal disorder. At times, FSIAD is also referred to as hypoactive sexual desire disorder. An expert opinion on FSIAD leads to the fact that about 10% of adult women are affected by this disorder.
Some of the major symptoms of this disorder are:
• A complete absence of, or limited, sexual thoughts
• The reduced response towards sexually stimulating cues
• Failure in maintaining an interest in sexual activity
• A sense of frustration
• Incompetence or low self-esteem
• Getting worried about performance during a sexual act
These factors are leading some women to seek help from Viagra following the trends set by men regarding the use of Viagra and getting satisfactory answers to their problems.
Some people think that Viagra can work for women in the same way as it does for men. The increased blood supply to the female genital organ will help to increase libido and enhance the sexual desire in suffering women. Instead of taking Viagra a new drug on the market can be used after consulting your doctor for HSDD.
A drug named “Female Viagra” is present in the market and the active ingredient is Flibanserin and sold under the name of Addyi. It is a non-hormonal drug and is used for the treatment of HSDD in women not reaching menopause yet. It is not yet licenced for use in the UK however.
Experimental findings of Viagra use in women
There are certainly very promising and interesting findings regarding this field of study.
An article featured in the American Journal of Urology is one such example. This article has been written by Laura Berman. She is director of Berman Centre at North Western University Chicago and Dr Jen Berman, director of female sexual medicine at UCLA Medical Centre in Los Angeles USA. A study was conducted in 202 postmenopausal or post-hysterectomy women. All the women had a complaint of female arousal disorder. The ages of women were between 30 and 71 years, with 51 years being the average.
The women kept the journal of their sexual responses during the whole trial period. The results of the experiment were based on the feedback given by the women taking part in the study. The findings told that the percentage of women that felt an increase in sexual feeling in their genitals during sexual intercourse was 69%. These women reported an increase of about eight times the pleasure in comparison to those women who undergo a placebo medication.
It is also noteworthy that the side effects observed in women are the same as reported among male population taking Sildenafil. Few mild symptoms reported are a headache and dizziness.
However, the women suffering from HSSD show less efficacy even after taking Sildenafil. This leads the researchers to a thought that underlying emotional or relationship problem leads to HSSD. These underlying causes lead to low sex derive, a problem which even Viagra cannot alleviate. It is necessary to mention that this study was conducted on a specific group of women, a small group of Postmenopausal women or woman who have had a hysterectomy, so these findings cannot be strictly applied to a general category of women. Also, these findings cannot tell about the effects of taking Viagra in pregnant, breastfeeding women or women of childbearing age.
Indeed, the use of Viagra for women is not approved by the Food and Drug Association whatever may be the circumstances. Therefore, the women are not allowed, by a doctor or healthcare professional, to ask for a prescription for Viagra.
What effect does Viagra have on women?
Although it is believed that Viagra has no effect on women with increasing sexual pleasure because the medical research conducted was failed to provide any conclusive statement so far. Viagra is known to give some effective results for females. It is used for treating problems other than HSSD.
Fertility treatment in women:
The researchers from the Sher Institute of Reproductive Medicine in Nevada conducted a test on women using Viagra as a fertility treatment. It is known that the uterus lining is thin in women having infertility issues. The uterus is not able to implant an egg because of its thin lining. Viagra has proved to be helpful in thickening the lining of the uterus, improving the chances of pregnancy. But, it is still not proven that taking Viagra will definitely help and thus women are not prescribed it.
Use of Viagra in treating menstrual pain:
In addition to fertility treatment, Viagra is also useful in the treatment of menstrual pain in women. The research team of Penn State College of Medicine has given a hypothesis that Viagra can be helpful for pain period and cramps. A group of women told that they found their monthly symptoms less painful after taking the Viagra. But the situation is not clear yet about the effects of Viagra with period pains. Further research plans are under consideration to find the possible adverse effects.
In conclusion, it is a long discussion that ‘Does Viagra work on women?’. Right now the clear-cut answer to this question is No. Although some researchers are showing promising results that it can help to achieve a pleasant and healthy sexual relationship. But the fact is that health authorities do not allow the use of Viagra in women at present.
It cannot be prescribed to them by health professionals. So, No, women cannot take Viagra until it is proved to be effective and completely safe.
It is better for women to consult their doctor or pharmacist and seek their help on sex-related issues and other symptoms mentioned above.
